This manufacturing engineering position will support the design and manufacture of our Harmonic gear product line. The engineer is responsible for developing, implementing and executing manufacturing processes to support the Harmonic product line, and researching areas for continues improvement in the Harmonic manufacturing processes. This position will interface with other departments such as Operations, Quality, Design Engineering and Product Development.
Leads production launch and improvement of new and existing programs for the Harmonic Drive product line. Establishes timelines and supports product design activities to ensure manufacturing processes are developed in parallel and taken into account to support customer requirements.
Leads application of data-driven methods to reduce costs and quality defects, such as FMEA, SPC, and PPAP.
Implements specifications and standards for new equipment to minimize downtime, time to repair, and operating costs.
Develops standard work and time standards for machining processes.
Applies lean manufacturing techniques to facilitate TAKT, flow, and pull, reduce waste, and support a continuous improvement culture.
Specifies and implements work holding & cutting tools for manufacturing operations.
Manufacturing Engineering duties include, but not limited to, the following:
- Detail process planning for Harmonic components
- Daily shop support of issues within manufacturing department
- Develop CNC Programs
- Develop tooling and workholding designs
- Develop manufacturing engineered processes
- Create process instructions (routings, work instructions, procedures, illustrations)
-Train operation personel on the execution of manufacturing methods and processes
- Defining inspection methodologies and supporting quality issues
- Demonstrate use of Continuous Improvement tools in support of effective root cause and corrective action identification and implementation
- Improve existing operations, incorporating new methods, processes and training
- Manage NPI projects
- Apply statistical methods to trouble shoot processes and conduct root cause analysis
- Discuss and solve complex problems in a team setting
-Maintains positive outlook and encourages and grows those around them
- Research areas for continues improvement in all areas of the manufacturing of Harmonic product line, both in design and the manufacturing
Required and Preferred Experience:
BS in mechanical or manufacturing engineering.
Minimum of 5 years relevant experience with emphasis in precision machining environment.
Minimum of 3 years relevant experience running production machines, both manual and CNC
Intimate knowledge of common machine tools including lathes, mills. mill/turn, grinders
Familiarity with the capabilities and constraints of gear hobs, gear shapers, and gear grinders.
Experience with process / tooling / and fixture design
Strong programming capabilities of 3, 4 and 5 axis CNC machines, preferably in Esprit
Strong SolidWorks, SolidEdge or similar CAD software capabilities & MS Office skills
Knowledge of DIN, SAE, ASTM and AGMA specifications
Knowledge of special processing operations such as Heat Treating, Non-Destructive Testing, Shot Peening, Coating, Plating and Painting
Strong critical thinking, analytical and problem solving skills.
Knowledge of quality systems, including PPAP, FMEA, Control Plans, GR&R, Process Capabilities Studies
Experience with LEAN initiatives and root cause analysis
Understanding of GD&T
Experience and understanding of precision inspection methods and equipment
Project Management skills
Ideal candidate will have experience of the design and manufacturing of strain wave gearing and components.
