International Trade Compliance Specialist

Key Responsibilities (Outcomes why does this job exist?):
The Trade Compliance Specialist will be responsible for developing, executing, and managing the import and export trade compliance program at Ball Horticultural Company. High emphasis on live, perishable shipments coming from international production facilities to North America for multimodal delivery. Responsibilities include reviewing and approving import/export license or permit applications, advising cross-functional partners about trade compliance matters, and interacting with USDA/APHIS and customs officials in regarding clearances, inspections and holds.

Essential Functions What needs to Be Accomplished?

  1. Ensure that company is compliant with domestic and foreign import and export requirements.
  2. Monitor weekly movement of live perishables from off-shore facilities and provide expert knowledge and assistance to airport partners/vendors during USDA/APHIS inspections.
  3. Oversee and provide guidance to the operations teams in the day-to-day compliance matters which are not limited to but include correct documentation guidance, USDA Hold intervention and communication, HTS classification, custom broker management, and export compliance matters.
  4. Ensure legal compliance to trade laws and regulations, including appropriate licensing for shipments.
  5. Serves as the resident expert on U.S other international import/export requirements.
  6. Review, respond to, and escalate as necessary all government inquiries related to trade compliance.


  1. BS or BA degree and a minimum of 8-10 years import/export administration
  2. Extensive knowledge of U.S. import and export control laws and regulations. Familiarity with USDA/APHIS process for importation of live perishables strongly preferred.
  3. High accuracy and attention to detail are essential requirements for this position.
  4. Ability to interact with cross-functional teams to resolve importation issues (USDA/APHIS, import agents, customers, sales, internal stakeholders).
  5. Ability to work independently and collaboratively to set and accomplish strategic goals.
  6. Proven ability to identify and resolve problems, sometimes of a complex nature with ability to make independent decisions.
  7. Communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
  8. Strong software and system skills SAP, Microsoft Suite
  9. Approximately 5% travel both domestic and international is required.
