Product Development Merchant
Major Tasks, Responsibilities, and Key Accountabilities
- Drives product innovation and vitality by identifying globally competitive products and services in order to drive sustained growth across specific product categories.
- Provides customized, cost-effective, quality products to remain competitive utilizing knowledge of private label sourcing expertise to drive sales and profitability.
- Identifies and qualifies domestic and international vendors in order to develop and manufacture globally competitive, private label products that meet organizational customer demands and quality expectations.
- Collaborates with each business and merchant team to drive product selection and line reviews.
- Negotiates, prepares, and executes supplier contracts and drives contract compliance while conducting supplier capacity and capability studies.
- Manages and measures supplier performance and consolidates supply base, as appropriate, to improve sourcing effectiveness.
- Works closely with product and design engineering, global merchant leaders, and sourcing quality teams to identify critical to quality flow-down characteristics in order to drive supplier processes and specifications for product development including, packaging, safety and environmental issues.
Nature and Scope
- Problems are typically defined by higher level leadership. Problems are difficult. Solutions require analysis and investigation.
- Decides how to achieve planned results within an organization's plans, policies, and guidelines. May set or change plans/goals within respective department or area.
- May manage department via multiple layers of managers OR directly supervise a staff of professional individual contributors at the senior or technical advisor level.
Work Environment
- Located in a comfortable indoor area. Any unpleasant conditions would be infrequent and not objectionable.
- Most of the time is spent sitting in a comfortable position and there is frequent opportunity to move about. On rare occasions there may be a need to move or lift light articles.
- Typically requires overnight travel 20% to 50% of the time.
Education and Experience
- Typically requires BS/BA in a related discipline. Generally 9+ years of experience in a related field, including several years in a management/supervisory capacity.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in a finance, engineering, business or a related field.
- 7+ years of product development, merchandising, supply chain, or product engineering experience.
- Strong quantitative and data analysis skills.
- Strong project management and process improvement skills.
